Vinyl mastering is a highly skilled and specialised art form. It involves taking a raw digital mix and manipulating it to sound great on vinyl. It is a complex and detailed process that requires an experienced engineer to be able to get the best possible sound from the mix. The process is often divided into 3 stages: cutting the master lacquer disc, the actual mastering process, and the production of the vinyl record. In the cutting stage, the engineer selects the frequencies to cut in the master lacquer disc.
This process is done to optimize the sound for playback in a vinyl format. Next, the engineer will process the mix, EQ-ing, compressing, or adding reverb and other effects as necessary. Finally, the wax master lacquer must be manufactured, and the metal stampers produced, which are then used to press the vinyl records. All of this requires an experienced engineer to ensure that the final product is of the highest quality. Vinyl mastering is a truly unique process, and one that requires experience, knowledge, and skill to master.
